Land Design & Development, Inc. was contracted by Sacred Heart Schools to prepare a green campus plan and to obtain a stipend from the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District to fund the construction. The Sacred Heart Schools Campus is home to children from preschool through high school. This project will be used as an educational opportunity for the school children to learn about the environment. The partnership between MSD and Sacred Heart Schools (SHA) will allow for teaching opportunities as well as for MSD to bring the general public in to educate them on the use of green infrastructure to help the environment and to provide stormwater quality treatment. This opportunity was made possible by the MSD Green Infrastructure Incentive Program. The program provides stipends for use of green infrastructure to encourage private entities to partner with MSD to provide water quality and as a way to reduce the amount of stormwater entering in the combined sewers/streams.
LD&D prepared the conceptual green campus master plan and, through a series of meetings and revisions, finalized a plan that met the school’s and MSD’s goals. This conceptual plan was then processed with MSD for approval of the stipend to help fund the project. LD&D coordinated the process between MSD and SHA to help finalize the contract. We then designed and prepared the construction plans and supporting calculations and coordinated the plan approvals for permits. The project involved four areas that included the use of rain gardens, pervious pavers, bioretention and infiltration practices for the 10 acre campus. Several different native planting styles were used to help emphasize the varying types of aesthetics these water quality practices can achieve.
